Go nylon and don't overthink it

Busy house, kids, a dog, people in and out all day? Nylon. That's the answer and I don't waver on it much. It's the toughest of the everyday carpet fibers and the thing that makes it worth the money is it bounces back, you walk on it, it springs up again, where the cheap stuff just lies down flat and gives up. Takes claws better too. Costs a little more than the budget fibers, sure, and you'll stop caring about that difference the first time you notice the hallway still looks fine three years in. For stairs and halls, honestly, I wouldn't put anything else down.

But you don't have to nylon the whole house

Here's what people miss. You don't buy one carpet for the entire place, you match it to the room. Polyester's softer, cheaper, fights stains genuinely well, its only real sin is it mats down fast where feet keep hitting it. So it's a bad call for the main hall and a totally fine one for a bedroom nobody's sprinting through. Put the plush, budget-friendly stuff where it's babied and save the tough nylon for the war zones. That's how you spend smart instead of overbuying.

Wool's the other one, and it's gorgeous, lasts for decades, naturally shrugs off dirt. It's also the priciest and a bit fussy about care. You see it in the nicer old homes around here. If you want it and you'll look after it, great. It's just not the budget play.

The part the store won't bring up

Fiber's half of it. The other half is how the carpet's actually built, and nobody in a showroom leads with this because the soft, deep, plush samples are the ones that move off the floor. But plush is exactly what crushes and shows every footprint in a busy room. Dense and low wins. A tight twist, sometimes they call it frieze, hides wear and fights matting way better than a loose cut pile. Berber, the looped stuff, holds up great on stairs and hides dirt, but it snags if you've got a cat, so, you know, factor that in.

Do this next time you're shopping, it takes two seconds. Push your fingers into the sample and try to spread the pile open to see the backing. Can't see through easily? Dense carpet. That's the one that lasts. The softest thing on the whole rack is usually first to look tired in a hallway, and it's usually the one they steer you toward.

And whatever you do, don't cheap out underneath

Everybody fixates on the carpet and forgets the pad, which is backwards in a high-traffic house. A good dense pad eats the shock of every step so the carpet wears slower. Skimp there and you've kneecapped even a great nylon. Same with the install, a loosely stretched carpet ripples and then wears along the buckles no matter how tough the fiber is, so the person laying it matters as much as what you picked.
