Bearded dragons are native to Australia, where they inhabit a variety of environments ranging from deserts and shrublands to forests and coastal areas. The scientific name for the most common pet species is Pogona vitticeps. They were first described in the early 20th century, but it wasn't until the 1990s that they gained popularity in the pet trade. Australia's strict export laws meant that all pet bearded dragons outside of Australia are descendants of individuals that were exported before the laws were put in place.
