America was founded upon the principles of civil and religious liberty, yet Revelation foretells that a power with "two horns like a lamb" will eventually "speak as a dragon" (Revelation 13:11), symbolizing a departure from those original principles. Jesus taught a clear distinction between civil government and worship: "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's." — Matthew 22:21 The issue in the last days is not whether Christians should be good citizens—they should—but whether civil power will be used to enforce religious observance. Ellen G. White warned: "When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power... our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government." (The Great Controversy, ch. 35) Percy T. Magan likewise cautioned that when governments enforce religious duties, liberty of conscience is endangered. The experiences of the three Hebrews (Daniel 3) and Daniel in the lions' den (Daniel 6) foreshadow the final crisis described in Revelation 13, where God's faithful people are called to obey Him above human authority. The Three Angels' Messages call every nation to: Fear God. Worship the Creator. Reject spiritual Babylon. Keep the commandments of God. Hold the faith of Jesus. The everlasting gospel—not political power—is God's method of preparing a people for Christ's soon return.
